St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands (October 28, 2026) – Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital & Medical Center (JFL) acknowledges recent media reports about a court judgment related to a 2024 financial agreement.

The agreement was established during a period of significant financial challenges and was intended to provide much-needed support to address outstanding obligations and sustain hospital operations.

Since agreeing, the hospital has made substantial payments toward its outstanding balance. Based on available financial records, the hospital has paid approximately $2.9 million to date. The hospital maintained scheduled payments through October 2025. Beginning in November 2025, ongoing financial pressures, compounded by the impact of a cybersecurity incident earlier that year, affected the hospital’s ability to maintain its previous payment schedule at the previously established level. The hospital communicated these challenges to the vendor, and JFL continued making payments as financial resources permitted.

The hospital acknowledges that an outstanding balance remains and is committed to fulfilling its responsibility to address it.

We understand the concerns raised regarding the medical equipment referenced in the court judgment, particularly its importance to patient care. As of this statement, the hospital has not removed any medical equipment. Maintaining access to the equipment and resources necessary for patient care remains a priority as the hospital works with legal counsel to address this matter.

The hospital has identified this outstanding obligation as a high payment priority and included it among its funding priorities for consideration under the bond-financing proposal recently submitted by Governor Albert Bryan Jr. The proposed financing remains subject to legislative approval and fund allocation.

We recognize the seriousness of this matter and remain committed to meeting our financial responsibilities while maintaining the essential healthcare services the St. Croix community depends on.

Because this matter involves ongoing legal proceedings, we will share additional information as appropriate.
