POSITION SUMMARY
The individual is under the general supervision of Registered Nurses, physicians or other surgical personnel assist in the preparation and care of surgical patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
1. Responsible for the cleanliness of the horizontal surfaces and lights in all OR prior to surgery.
2. Responsible for setting clocks and turning on warmers in the OR.
3. Assist in transporting patients from Nursing Units and Recovery Room.
4. Demonstrate and practice a good understanding of sterile technique.
5. Perform sponge, needle and instrument counts in an accurate manner
6. Assist team in placing patients on operating table also positioning patients and in skin preparation by holding extremities.
7. Observe patients vital signs, check charts, and assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
8. Responsible for passing instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants during surgery.
9. Assist in lifting and transferring patients from operation table to stretcher.
10. Assist in preparing ambulatory patients for operation room.
11. Initiating clean up and turn-over of the surgery room.
12. Responsible for the transportation of specimen to laboratory, instruments to central supply if necessary.
13. Assist in the restocking of rooms after procedure.
14. Responsible for the assembly of both sterile and non-sterile equipment, as well as adjust and check it to ensure it is working properly.
15. Prepares syringes and needles for disposal – remove and replace red boxes in the OR
16. Performs other duties as directed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. High school or equivalent. Completion of a Surgical Technician Program.
2. Possess and maintains certification as a Certified Surgical Technician.
3. Current BLS Certification.
4. Must be willing to take calls as instructed by Head Nurse.
5. Must possess and demonstrate a high degree of leadership, organizational ability, and communication skills.

1. Knowledge of Nursing Philosophy, objectives, and goals of the department.
2. Ability to follow oral and written directions.
3. Ability to relate with tact and understand to deal with parents, doctors, staff and all other persons contacted during the course of work.
4. Ability to employ sound judgment in the planning and execution of assigned duties.
5. Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations that apply to the practice of in an inpatient care setting.
6. Knowledge of hospital/departmental policies and procedures, emergency protocols, Joint Commission, Center for Medicare and Medicaid services and all other local and federal regulatory standards
7. Ability to make presentations before management, public groups, and staff.
8. Knowledge of analytical and grammatical skills necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
9. Skilled in maintaining records and preparing reports.
10. Ability to (or possess the skill level to gain ability to) define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; also apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
11. Familiarity with spreadsheet and overall computer skills.
12. Ability to work with a wide variety of other professionals and staff engaged in the delivery of health care services.
13. Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality.
14. Ability to gain the confidence and respect of the public to be served.
15. Ability to work well independently including without administrative support when required.
16. Organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills are essential.
17. Ability to work in a highly visible position undergoing significant changes with multiple constituents, each with demands exceeding resources.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work in a climate-controlled and well-lighted environment with a smoke-free policy. Employee will work in an office and throughout the building daily. Has Category 1 risk of exposure to infectious diseases, but receives training in hand hygiene practices, Universal Precautions and has access to personal protective equipment if direct exposure is anticipated; is subject to interruptions and noise daily.
