POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Medicine, the Primary Care Clinic Nurse Practitioner is responsible for quality and completeness of assigned medical services of JFL’s clinics. The Primary Care Nurse Practitioner practices under a supervising physician as per the USVI Nurse Practice Act and as set forth by standards of medical practice and policy and procedures.
Under the general supervision of the lead physician and in accordance with standards of medical practice and policy and procedures, the Primary Care Clinic Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing primary care to ambulatory patients through regular health assessments and the management of common acute and chronic stable conditions. The Primary Care Clinic Nurse Practitioner obtains a health history and performs a physical assessment, identifies problems, and formulates plans that include treatment, health education and counseling. The Primary Care Clinic Nurse Practitioner collaborates with other health care professionals in assessing and managing health care problems and maintaining continuity of care.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
· Perform complete examinations, assessments, and formulates treatment plans for patients including adult and pediatric.
· Provide comprehensive, high quality medical services to all patients without bias, regardless of age, sex, gender identification, income, national origin or language
· Orders and interprets in a timely fashion result of laboratory, radiology, and other tests.
· Determines and implements courses of treatment according to evidence-based practices.
· Provides and monitors the results of treatment and makes adjustments as needed.
· Proactively assists the patient and family through all facets of accessing care at JFL and serves as a resource to resolve patient and family concerns.
· Educates patients and family members in health promotion and disease prevention as appropriate.
· Monitors and ensures compliance with clinical evidence-based guidelines for adult and pediatric health care.
· Participates in the review, revision, and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure medical practices are in full compliance with regulatory requirements.
· Oversees the maintenance of records/documents in accordance with clinic policies and procedures.
· Monitors strict adherence to universal infection precautions as established by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention; Occupational Safety and Health Administration; DHS/OA; and clinic standards.
· Participates in team meetings and administrative tasks as assigned by Lead Physicians or the Chief of Medicine.
· Reviews and implements guidelines and protocols as disseminated by administration.
· Communicates effectively with all levels of staff throughout the clinic by consistently utilizing and facilitating effective strategies to encourage collaborative problem solving and decision making.
· Completes documentation for clinic sessions in a timely manner ensuring accuracy and completeness to ensure the clinic can collect funds for the services.
· Consider individuals’ cultural, psychological, social and environmental factors in creating treatment/care plans.
· Assure that health education is provided with each patient encounter when applicable.
· Provide patients information concerning their evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.
· Actively participate and engage in quality improvement for clinic efficiencies
· Consult supervising physician when needed for complicated or case is outside the scope of practice.
· Participate in the development of medical department policies and procedures in accordance with JFL’s policies, accreditation requirements and professional standards.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative, fellow peers, and other work related outside agencies.
· Performs other related duties
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Must possess a current Virgin Islands license as a Registered Nurse and Certified Advance Registered Nurse Practitioner.
· Completion of a Masters or Doctorate Degree from a Nurse Practitioner Program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission.
· Current Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
· Must possess and demonstrate a high degree of leadership, organizational ability, and communication skills. Knowledge of adult inpatient care management, policies, budgeting, personnel management, and census development is required.
· Current BLS Certification required. ACLS, PALS certification is preferred.
· Current DEA license.
· One (1) year of experience working within a community clinic.
· Excellent communication and written skills.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
· Ability to work well under pressure analyze and evaluate individual member’s needs, reach sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
· Must be detail oriented and be able to multi-task effectively.
· Demonstrate experience in the delivery of primary care.
· Must be sensitive to the diverse patient population.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
· Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations that apply to the practice in an outpatient care setting.
· Provide departmental leadership, training/delegation of training of new employees and ongoing education and training of all departmental staff.
· General knowledge of health services and programs offered through JFLH in order to coordinate and obtain services requested.
· Knowledge of principles and practices of research- based medicine and care.
· Knowledge of the etiology of communicable diseases and human nutrition.
· Knowledge of the rules, regulations and procedures of an Indian Health Clinic.
· Knowledge of social, cultural and economic factors as they relate to health and disease.
· Knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques.
· Knowledge of public health and community resources.
· Ability to make presentations before management, public groups, and staff.
· Ability to (or possess the skill level to gain ability to) define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
· Ability to work with a wide variety of other professionals and staff engaged in the delivery of health care services.
