POSITION SUMMARY
An employee in this class is required to perform janitorial and related duties, many of which may require exerting physical strength. The employee is usually assigned to the housekeeping section to perform a variety of general cleaning tasks to maintain patient rooms, offices, hallways and other assigned areas of the hospital. Work is reviewed by the Housekeeping Supervisor other supervisory personnel upon completion of assignments for compliance with instructions given. Work requires an ability to learn specific tasks rather than prior experiences.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
1. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, improvement performance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
2. Dusts furniture, woodwork, equipment and dust mops’ floors.
3. Polishes & cleans fixtures in utility rooms and bathrooms.
4. Operates mechanical floor cleaners, polishers and vacuums; damp mops rooms, halls, stairways and public areas.
5. Remove refuse and trash from nursing units to garbage storage bins; assist with loading & unloading and moving of supplies and small equipment on the ward.
6. Cleans vents, fans and other equipment using vacuum machines.
7. Cleans fixtures, top of windows, door frames and high areas using a ladder.
8. Gather and disposes of trash and waste materials including biological waste; Buffs, strips, waxes, and polishes floor.
9. Cleans and disinfects all fixtures, floors, mirrors, windows, doors, and walls of bathrooms.
10. Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings; Attends meetings as required.
11. Changes curtains as needed.
12. Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION
1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Some experience as a janitor or other work involving performing cleaning services. Prior experience in an acute care facility preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations that apply to the practice of housekeeping processes in an inpatient care setting.
2. Knowledge of material, equipment and methods commonly used in cleaning and other janitorial work including ability to read and understand MSDS.
3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons contacted within the course of the work.
4. Ability to work rotating shifts.
5. Ability to gain the confidence and respect of the public to be served.
6. Ability to work well independently
7. Organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills are essential.
8. Ability to work in a highly visible position undergoing significant changes with multiple constituents, each with demands exceeding resources.
9. Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality.
